Friday feature - Cheap Thrills

August 31, 2012

Since we were discussing video game budgeting yesterday...

Cheap Thrills is one of my favorite stores in the area I live. This store is a great place to visit if you're looking to buy new or vintage music, movies, games (video and tabletop), comics and more. My main interest is the video games (of course). Cheap Thrills will not discriminate against trade in items that are "older" than what mainstream stores will accept (NES, SNES, SEGA, etc). You are welcome to choose in store credit or cash for your trade-ins (although the in store credit is usually higher).

They do not have a huge online presence, visiting them in person is definitely the way to go!

Check out their Facebook.

What about you? What are your favorite privately owned geek paradises?

  1. Neil and I pretty much never go to SLO without stopping at Cheap Thrills. But in Camarillo, our "Cheap Thrills" is Mero Games! They have the BEST selection of GBA games I've ever seen (picked up LOZ: Minish Cap there, and they pretty much have all the Pokemon and Mario GBA games in stock) and even have Sega Saturn games and other hard to find games. They also specialize in Lego Star Wars, have lots of collectibles there, and the owners are Hockey fans! If your ever in Camarillo, check it out! https://www.facebook.com/mobileprotection#!/pages/Mero-Games/153636475775

  2. Jon always has me scope out the retro games (this makes me sad and feel old) when I go garagesale-ing. I hate that big box stores just stop carrying them.

    What's your best find?

    1. I don't own anything older than a PlayStation 2 (although I wish I did) so I can't say I've bought from their huge selection of Nintendo/Super Nintendo/Sega games, but I have bought some PlayStation one games I've missed like the original Spyro games and Crash Bandicoot. I think I also turned in enough items to them to get Fable 2 without having to pay for it at all (when it was new).

  3. Ahhhh... that place sounds so cool I wish there was a place like that ware I live. we had something similar onces not as good as what you're saying but this place had a skate shop game thing mix. it was in a terrible location hard to get to the parking spot out front. we had to go park like 2 blocks down what killed it was they did not advertise the building had no sign out front the storefront looked abandoned I only knew 1 guy there who wanted to work the other 2 partners of his were so lazy and would leave in the middle of the day.... it just goes to show you, for a great sounding store like cheap thrills a lot of things have to come together. a good location well kept storefront and advertising and most important of all management that actually cares about the customer.
for me now mostly if you want to sell or trade in your video games you got 3 options...

    A.pawn shop.
    B.gamestop.
    C.best buy.

how about D. none of the above, well thats not really fair I do like to go to gamestop they have some really good stuff but if your trade in is older then 6 months from its original release. you're not going to get much for it on average.

P.s. Keep up the good work Melissa. Any topic that makes me right this much on a reply has to be good... I can be lazy at times

    1. Indeed! I don't believe I've ever actually traded anything in to GameStop or Best Buy. But I have bought used games from them at a good price. Such as Dragon Age, Spyro: A Hero's Tale, Final Fantasy XIII and Harvest Moon: Tree of Tranquility.
