PlayStation replacement?

August 21, 2012

The oldest and most treasured console I own at the moment is my original case PlayStation 2. I am unimpressed with the PlayStation 3’s nearly nonexistent backwards compatibility and I find that a key point in my reluctance to completely replace my PS2 with a PS3.

I received my PS2 as a present my senior year of high school. I was thrilled that it would play the then newest games as well as my favorite games from the PlayStation one. I am a very nostalgic person and there are many games I am quite fond of that were released for the PlayStation one and two; All of the Final Fantasies, Kingdom Hearts, Okami, Spyro, etc. I’ve hung onto this system after the PlayStation 3 came out because of money issues and by the time I could afford the PlayStation 3, there were rumors circulating that they were no longer completely backwards compatible, if at all.

My wonderful, generous cousin gifted my husband and I a PS3 for our wedding. It has been a very resourceful DVD/Blu-ray player as well as a gateway for introducing my husband to gaming (Uncharted and Batman). That’s right, I game and he doesn’t, this shocks some people. As soon as I set it up I popped a popular PS2 game in the vain hopes it might work, no luck.

There is also the PlayStation network where you can download some of the more popular PlayStation one and two titles. This could be an option for keeping all things condensed and replacing the PS2, however you would have to repay for the game that you already own and if you like any obscure titles they may not be offered.

The other two consoles in my possession are an Xbox360 and a Wii (both of which are backwards compatible, come on now Sony). Between those, the PS3 and my computer, I am able to purchase and utilize any new title and with my PlayStation 2, I am able to enjoy the older PlayStation games.

I will hang onto my PS2 until I am satisfied my games can be replaced, or until it fails to work anymore. If it fails, we have Cameron’s old PS2 as a backup.

Is it sad that I have such loyalty to my inanimate objects?

  2. I still have my Super Nintendo. I will keep it even after it dies. It still works right now, though! :)
