How to start a new game in Closure

January 15, 2013

Closure is an independent puzzle/platformer title that centers around the concept of light. Lighting is a key gameplay mechanic and must be used through each of the many levels, to reach the door at the end and travel through it. The player can touch only platforms and walls illuminated by light bulbs or orbs of light the player can carry; anything beyond the light does not exist. The player has to make use of the light source and light orbs in order to get through the area without falling into blackness.

I love the design and concept of this game and I will write a review once I have finished, but before I could begin I ran into a technical issue.

Currently, there is no simple way to begin a new game.

There are no direct instructions on the forums (or elsewhere) about how to fix it. I have experimented on my own and I can fix it. Here’s how…

Visit your Steam library -> Right click Closure -> Select Properties ->Select the Updates tab -> Uncheck Enable Steam Cloud synchronization for Closure.

Now let’s dispose of your old save file.

Open the main Computer file (located in the start menu) -> Open the C: drive -> Open the Program files or Program files (x86) folder -> Open the Steam folder -> Open the Userdata folder -> Open the numbered folder (this is your numerical id #, careful who you share it with) -> Open the 72000 folder (that is Closure’s identification number) -> Open the Remote folder.

Important! The goal is to clear that remote folder after you disable the cloud sync. If you need to keep your previous save file, you can simply change the saved file's name; or create a folder elsewhere (in the Documents folder is good) and move the file there; or if you are completely done with your old save file you may delete it.

When you start the game, it will pause and minimize itself as an error message window pops up to let you know the save file has been corrupted. We know this, so go ahead and close the error box and reselect Closure from where it minimized.

The main menu will still say “Continue game” but you will start from the beginning and a new save file will be created at that point.

When you're done playing the first session, retrace your steps on Steam to re-enable the Cloud Sync. In the Steam library change the view to List View in the top right corner. Look at Closure on the list, notice how there is a cloud icon next to the game. Try to launch and the window below pops up. Select the Upload to the Steam Cloud option to save over any older cloud syncing.

Enjoy!
