Helping the homeless

February 26, 2013

I experienced something last week that disturbed me.

A homeless man.

Beyond pity for the state he’s in, It isn’t the man himself that disturbed me, what disturbed me is how everyone acted around him.

Cameron and I, not wanting to cook for the night, jumped in his car and drove to the nearest Taco Bell. As we were stepping out of the car a homeless man approached Cameron and asked him if he had any spare change, then launched into a story about his prostate cancer and other equally horrible circumstances. Whether the man had cancer or not he did not look very healthy and my heart grew heavy. I told him we had no cash. As a rule, I do not give cash to the homeless because there is no guarantee they will use it to buy useful items. I would much rather buy them food or water, an umbrella, etc. Anyways, when we told him we did not have any cash, he asked if we could buy him a burrito. After a split second I whole-heartedly agreed.

A gentleman in his forties arrived at the same time we did and avoided the man by using us as a decoy. When we entered Taco Bell he scrutinized me like I was the craziest person in the world for buying a homeless man food…

Instead of one burrito, I ordered him two burrito supremes (with everything on them). As we waited for our food I saw the man approach another car pulling up to the drive-through with a two girls in their early twenties, but I didn’t really pay them any attention after that. As we exited the building I gave him his burritos and he was just bursting with happiness. He chattered away to us for a good five minutes and during that time I concluded he might have been slightly mentally off, but most of all lonely.

While he talked, I noticed the same car he had approached while we were inside backed all the way out of the drive-through. Shortly thereafter one of the workers from inside Taco Bell came out and told the man he needed to leave the premises because they were getting customer complaints. He seemed so distraught and told her that he wasn’t saying lewd or rude things to us and we confirmed this. He thanked us and left shortly thereafter, and we headed home.

It made me happy to help someone in need. It made me disturbed that those girls complained about him and then threw a fit and backed out of a drive-through line because they wouldn’t eat at a place with homeless people (correction one homeless man) nearby.

It disturbs me that people can be so rude and immature. If you do not have the means or the will to feed someone who is homeless, politely decline and move on. There is no need to make a scene!

At some point in my life I want to volunteer at a local shelter. It definitely builds character and puts things into perspective.

Have you ever helped someone who is/was homeless?

The Iconoclasts (Alpha 2) - The First 30 Minutes

The Iconoclasts by Muju

Hello and welcome to an introductory 30 minute look at The Iconoclasts. This is not a review, this is a first impression for you, the viewer, to get an idea of what this game has in store for you should you choose to play it for yourself. After the game is finished and I play it through, a written review will be posted here to supply a more well-rounded pool of information.

The Iconoclasts is an independent video game currently being developed by Joakim Sanberg of Konjak Games.

In The Iconoclasts, the theocratic government exclusively controls anything pertaining to science and industry; practicing in associated fields is considered illegal. Local churches distribute necessary power supplies to citizens for unreasonably high prices, driving them to seek other methods of keeping their homes and businesses operable.

Our protagonist, Robin, is the local renegade mechanic to her village and has earned both love and resentment for her abilities within the community. As you guide Robin through her adventure you’ll unravel the government’s motives while meeting new friends, fighting battles and solving puzzles.

I am really looking forward to this game, but you can't rush art!

Play the alpha version of The Iconoclasts!

Finding the right person for you

February 11, 2013

Dear Reader,

You are unique and you should never sacrifice who you are and what you deserve in a relationship for another human being.

Don’t rush love. Focus on who you are on your own and someone that loves you for you, will find you or you’ll find them.

I had been on the search for true love even before I knew what it was. I was raised by two wonderful parents who have been together since they were high school sweethearts. My grandparents each had equally fascinating love stories (although not quite as direct). Not to mention a healthy dose of romance from watching movies, reading books and playing video games.

My parents, as well as other couples like them, were and are very lucky. Let’s face it, not a lot of people find their true love right out of the starting gate. I’d had a number of failed relationships over the years, and in many I found myself sacrificing my own feelings to make them happy with little to no reciprocation. I wasted my time trying to struggle through relationships that didn’t even make me happy. If you are unhappy in your relationship, move on and find someone who is worth your time; biological clock be damned.

A little over three years ago now, not willing to sacrifice who I was anymore, I sat down and made a list of what I needed in another person. A week or two later Cameron and I started talking and even though I was resolved to call it off if he didn’t have the qualities on my list, I didn’t have to worry, Cameron is EVERYTHING on my list.

I strongly urge those of you who are looking for someone special to sit down and make a list of what is important to you and then never waver from it. It will pay off in the end, I promise. Below is the list I wrote over three years ago before meeting Cameron.

  1. He has to like or at least enjoy himself at Disneyland.
  2. He has to like animals. I’m not giving them up for anyone.
  3. He has to take pleasure out of life, not feel that every day is the same and loathe routine.
  4. He has to like the holidays, especially Christmas and celebrate it with warmth and enthusiasm.
  5. He has to love his family and be willing to spend time with mine, maybe even love them too.
  6. He has to have a real job, or be willing to get one to contribute to our life together.
  7. He has to want me and make an effort to keep me.
  8. He has to be loyal down to his toes, if I am trying not to be jealous (I am a jealous person by nature) he has to try not to make me so.
  9. He has to want to experience things, and not sit on his butt all day, but also realize we do not have to go out every night.
  10. He has to love me through and through and not be a quitter if things get hard.
  11. He has to allow me to listen to music I like, not just his choice.
  12. He has to allow me to pick movies or shows, not just his choice.

Cameron and I were married this past June 2012. Throughout the course of our relationship and marriage we have not fought once. We communicate and compromise. He loves me for me, and I love him for him. I am the happiest I’ve ever been because I decided to be me and find someone who accepted and complimented the person I am.

Scribblenauts Unlimited Object Shards by

Scribblenauts Unlimited review

February 5, 2013

Scribblenauts Unlimited is an action puzzle video game developed by 5th Cell and published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment for Microsoft Windows, Nintendo 3DS and Wii U.

Maxwell’s parents, both experienced and successful explorers, have given him a magical notebook that can create or edit any object just by writing in it. One day, Maxwell comes across a hungry old man and, as a joke, he uses his notebook to create and give the man a rotten apple. Angered, the old man accuses Maxwell of being spoiled (a correct assessment), and places a curse on Maxwell's sister Lily that slowly turns her to stone. To free her, Maxwell must obtain Starites (a form of currency obtained by helping those in need).

Similar to previous titles of the series, Maxwell returns as the player character and the objective is still to collect Starites by completing various tasks. However, Scribblenauts Unlimited is more adventure-based than Scribblenauts and Super Scribblenauts, giving the player an incentive to collect the Starites and save the protagonist’s sister. Players journey to different themed areas of the map and accept challenges from NPCs. One or two NPCs per level will transport you to a self-contained level, where you must solve multiple puzzles before being awarded with a Starite. There are now smaller challenges within each themed area that reward you with Starite shards - collecting ten of these shards will form a full Starite.

The game was built on an upgraded version of the “Objectnaut” engine, providing the player with several additional options when creating objects. As well as the adjective system that was introduced in Super Scribblenauts, players can now apply multiple objects to one another; for example, creating a pig with wings. Furthermore, there are numerous features that can be assigned to objects, such as movement and offensive capabilities. Players can also customize their objects with scaling and coloring tools. Customized objects can be named and saved - typing in the name of a saved custom object allows it to be spawned at any time. One of my favorites is Batman, but there are many more creations available if you don’t feel like creating your own.

Cheerful music and a youthful art style make this an ideal game for relaxing. I loved the opportunity to be creative and trying to think outside the box when using the magic journal to help other characters. I highly recommend this game to children and adults who really want to have fun while developing their creativity and imagination.

Anti-inflammatory foods

February 4, 2013

www.gutsyhealth.com

Food is fuel the body’s organs use to perform at optimal levels. The largest organ of your body is your skin, so it makes perfect sense that a poor diet full of inflammatory foods will cause the body to break down. For example, Acne is an inflammatory disease and all of its lesions are inflammatory.

The food we eat is converted to sugar as it is digested. Foods that are rapidly converted to sugar are a problem. Prevent rapid rises in blood sugar, rapid rises cause an insulin response in the body which leads to an inflammatory response.

Above is a list of good anti-inflammatory foods created by Susan at GutsyHealth.com These foods should be supplemented into your daily diet over other more inflammatory foods.
