Scribblenauts Unlimited review

Scribblenauts Unlimited is an action puzzle video game developed by 5th Cell and published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment for Microsoft Windows, Nintendo 3DS and Wii U.

Maxwell’s parents, both experienced and successful explorers, have given him a magical notebook that can create or edit any object just by writing in it. One day, Maxwell comes across a hungry old man and, as a joke, he uses his notebook to create and give the man a rotten apple. Angered, the old man accuses Maxwell of being spoiled (a correct assessment), and places a curse on Maxwell's sister Lily that slowly turns her to stone. To free her, Maxwell must obtain Starites (a form of currency obtained by helping those in need).

Similar to previous titles of the series, Maxwell returns as the player character and the objective is still to collect Starites by completing various tasks. However, Scribblenauts Unlimited is more adventure-based than Scribblenauts and Super Scribblenauts, giving the player an incentive to collect the Starites and save the protagonist’s sister. Players journey to different themed areas of the map and accept challenges from NPCs. One or two NPCs per level will transport you to a self-contained level, where you must solve multiple puzzles before being awarded with a Starite. There are now smaller challenges within each themed area that reward you with Starite shards - collecting ten of these shards will form a full Starite.

The game was built on an upgraded version of the “Objectnaut” engine, providing the player with several additional options when creating objects. As well as the adjective system that was introduced in Super Scribblenauts, players can now apply multiple objects to one another; for example, creating a pig with wings. Furthermore, there are numerous features that can be assigned to objects, such as movement and offensive capabilities. Players can also customize their objects with scaling and coloring tools. Customized objects can be named and saved - typing in the name of a saved custom object allows it to be spawned at any time. One of my favorites is Batman, but there are many more creations available if you don’t feel like creating your own.

Cheerful music and a youthful art style make this an ideal game for relaxing. I loved the opportunity to be creative and trying to think outside the box when using the magic journal to help other characters. I highly recommend this game to children and adults who really want to have fun while developing their creativity and imagination.
